Avid is one of the big names in audio and video production software. The company offers professional media editing software for prices as high as $2499, and the Avid Studio home movie-making suite runs $170.

But now the company is launching a $5 version designed for the Apple iPad.

Avid Studio for iPad is optimized for touchscreen input and the Apple tablet’s small screen. The mobile app can’t export videos in Adobe Flash format, but you can export apps to the Avid Studio for desktop app, which means that you can start working on a video on your iPad and finish on your PC.

The iPad app lets you work with audio, videos, and photos on your device or capture videos and photos while using the app. There’s support for 3D animations, transitions and titles as well as other effects such as picture-in-picture, pan and zoom.

All Things D reports that the $4.99 price tag is introductory. Avid will raise the price to $7.99 after 30 days. That’s still a bargain compared with the company’s desktop software, but Avid Studio for iPad will have to compete with Apple’s $4.99 iMovie app which offers many (but not all) of the same features.

Avid Studio for iPad is available from the iTunes App Store.

And it turns out an awful lot of people were waiting to do just that.

Just three days after the jailbreak utilities were first released, the iPhone Dev Team reports that nearly half a million iPhone 4S devices have been jailbroken. The iPad 2 numbers are a little funkier, with about 300,000 new iPad 2 jailbreaks and around 150,000 people who had jailbroken their iPads while running iOS 4.x now upgrading to iOS 5.0.1 and jailbreaking again.

The stats are compiled from the number of new devices pinging the server for the Cydia store for jailbroken devices. Cydia is installed when you jailbreak your iDevice.

In addition to enabling support for apps that aren’t available from the App Store, jailbreaking allows you to access hidden files and settings on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and make changes to the look and feel of the operating system.

Up until recently it was easy to jailbreak an iPad 1, iPhone 4, or earlier devices including all iPod touch models. But the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 both have new hardware that had proven more difficult to crack… until now.

A day after the first tools for jailbreaking an iPad 2 or iPhone 4S were released for Mac users, the iPhone Dev Team has updated their utility to work with Windows.

The process is a bit more involved since it relies on a command-line utility that walks you through the process one step at a time for debugging purposes. <del datetime="2012-01-22T01:30:58+00:00">But if you don’t want to wait for the Windows version of the tools to get a graphical user interface, now you don’t have to.</del>

Update: Chronic Dev Team has also released an easier-to-use program for Windows as well as a Linux utility for jailbreaking an iPhone 4S or iPad 2.

Just download the latest CLI from the bottom of the official post at the iPhone Dev Team Blog, unzip it to a folder on your computer, open a command prompt and type “cinject -i payloads/jailbreak.mobileconfig” (without quotes) to get started.

You can also find a step-by-step walkthrough at FSM or more information at iPhone hacker Musclenerd’s website.

Chronic Dev Team has released a utility that can jailbreak the iPad 2 or iPhone 4S. It’s the first jailbreak utility available for devices with Apple’s dual-core A5 processor. Up until now all jailbreaking tools only worked on phones or tablets with the A4 processor or earlier chips.

The new tool is called GreenPois0n Absinthe and you can download it from the GreenPois0n website. It’s available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

The iPhone Dev Team also has also released a command line-based jailbreaking tool soon which walks you through the process one step at a time. It works on Mac or Windows.

This should help identify any remaining problem spots. Eventually the latest jailbreak tools will be incorporated in the next version of the popular redsn0w utility for jailbreaking iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad models.

Jailbreaking an iOS device allows users to install apps that aren’t available in the App Store including software which can change the boot logo, notification system, multitasking tray, or make other system-level changes to the operating system. It will also probably void your warranty.

Absinthe performs an “untethered” jailbreak, which means you can reboot your phone or tablet without having to connect it to a computer via a USB cable.

Some of the top iOS hackers have announced that the great white whale of jailbreaking is about to go down: they’ve successfully jailbroken both the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

Update: The Chronic Dev Team has released GreenPois0n Absinthe, which you can now use to jailbreak the iPhone 4S or iPad 2.

Apple’s two latest iOS devices use the dual core Apple A5 processor and aren’t vulnerable to the same tools used to jailbreak earlier devices — but a new exploit has been discovered that will jailbreak those devices.

Hacker pod2g and the folks at the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team are working out the last few bugs, but they each plan to release tools that will allow users to perform an untethered jailbreak on the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 soon.

Jailbreaking an iOS device allows you to install third party apps that aren’t available from the App Store or make other changes to the look and feel of the device by accessing files and settings that are normally hidden from end users.

This will be an untethered jailbreak, which means you’ll be able to reboot your device without connecting it to a computer with a USB cable.

Chronic Dev will release a tool with a graphical user interface which you can run on a PC or Mac to jailbreak the devices. The iPhone Dev Team will eventually incorporate the ability to jailbreak devices with A5 chips into its popular redsn0w jailbreak utility, but first iPhone Dev will release a command-line utility that walks you through the process one step at a time. This will help diagnose any problems users are having.

The jailbreak will work on iPad 2 models running iOS 5.0.1 and iPhone 4S devices running iOS 5.0 or iOS 5.0.1. If you’re hoping to carrier unlock an iPhone 4S you should stick with iOS 5.0.

For the most part this is a bug fix release which doesn’t offer any major new features, but it does return the option to disable 3G and rely on Edge wireless connectivity which can help prolong your battery life (while slowing your internet connection to a crawl).

The update changes the baseband, so if you jailbreak and carrier unlock your iPhone, you should probably proceed with extreme caution before applying the latest update.

Zephyr is a utility for jailbroken iPhone and iPod touch devices running iOS 5 and later. The app currently adds support for two new gestures:

You can swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the multitasking app switcher without touching the home button.

You can swipe from the left or right edge of the screen to switch between currently running apps without using the task switcher at all.

In other words, Zephyr can save you time if all you want to do is flip back and forth between two apps — but if you often find yourself swiping from the edge of the display to play games or perform other actions you might accidentally end up switching apps. It’s a neat idea, though.

Developer chpwn plans to add support for additional gestures in the future, and you can disable any gesture that you don’t like in your devices settings.

You can purchase Zephyr from the Cydia store for jailbroken devices for $2.99.

Hackers have been jailbreaking iOS 5 devices since Apple’s latest mobile operating system was still in beta. But up until now the only way to jailbreak an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 5.0 and up was to perform a tethered jailbreak. That means that you needed to connect your mobile device to a computer and run the jailbreak software again any time you reboot.

Jailbreaking allows iOS users to access files and settings that would not otherwise be available, install apps that aren’t available in the App Store, unlock iPhones for use on alternate cellular networks, and make other changes.

Now a hacker named pod2g has released the tools to perform an untethered jailbreak, and the folks at the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team have packed them up into some easy-to-use utilities.

This means that it’s easy for almost anyone to perform an untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1 so that you can reboot your mobile device without losing any functionality.

There are a few caveats. First, this only works on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1, and 3rd and 4th generation iPods touch. Newer devices with Apple A5 processors such as the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S aren’t supported. Pod2g is hoping to hack those devices next though.

Second, if you jailbreak a device running iOS 5.0 or later you’ll lose one of the cooler new features: the ability to perform over-the-air operating system updates without connecting your device to a computer and running iTunes. If you’re a long-time jailbreaker that might not be a problem, since you probably don’t want to upgrade to iOS 5.0.2 or iOS 5.1 or whatever comes next until you know it’s safe to jailbreak.

Third, if you’re using an unlocked iPhone with ultrasn0w or gevey, you’ll need to jump through some extra hoops and make sure you’re using a custom IPSW with iOS 5.0.1.

Finally, there’s no guarantee that everything will work perfectly — and Apple probably won’t be too sympathetic if you show up at a store complaining that you broke your iPhone when trying to jailbreak it.

That said, it’s pretty easy to jailbreak an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad using the new tools.

How to upgrade from a tethered jailbreak to an untethered jailbreak

If you’ve already got a device running a tethered jailbreak, all you have to do to switch to the untethered jailbreak is fire up the Cydia store on your device, search for an app from the Chronic Dev Team called Corona, install it and run it.

You can also use the iPhone Dev Team’s redsn0w utility to perform an untethered jailbreak on top of a tethered jailbreak. But assuming you’re starting from a device that isn’t jailbroken, here’s how to proceed. These steps were tested with a Windows PC and a 4th generation iPod touch. The steps should be very similar for supported iPhone and iPad models.

How to perform a fresh, untethered jailbreak

1. Make sure you’re running iOS 5.0.1 on a supported device. You’ll also need a computer with iTunes installed.

2. Download redsn0w 0.9.10b1 or later for Windows or OS X.

3. Unzip the file to a directory on your computer and open that directory.

4. Right-click on redsn0w.exe and select “run as administrator.” Make sure to click yes on any alerts that pop up.

5. Click the button that says jailbreak.

6. Follow the instructions and make sure your device is turned off and plugged into your computer. (Turning an iOS device off isn’t quite as simple as tapping the power button. Make sure to press-and-hold the power button, then slide the red button that pops up to completely shut down your device).

7. Click Next in the redsn0w utility to continue.

8. Enter DFU mode with the following steps:

Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.

Without lifting your finger from the power button, press and hold the home button for 10 seconds.

Keep holding the home button for another 15 seconds, but lift your finger from the power button.

9. Redsn0w will identify your device and start sending data to it. This will take a few minutes.

10. Next, select the option to install Cydia, plus any other options you’d like and click Next.

11. Your phone will reboot and more data will be sent to your device — then redsn0w will let you know that you’re done.

Now you should see lines of text fly on your mobile device, followed by a walking pineapple and a progress meter.

When your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad reboots you should be finished. You’ll know your device is jailbroken if you see the icon for the Cydia Store on you home screen.

LogeMeIn‘s mobile apps for iOS and Android let you login to a remote computer to run applications, access files, and perform other functions that can make your smartphone or tablet feel like a full-fledged computer. But at $30, LogMeIn is kind of expensive for a mobile app.

Now the company has released a free version of its iOS app that offers basic remote desktop functionality.

You can use the free app to login to a Mac or PC using the free app to run programs. For instance you can view documents stored on your PC or surf the web in a full version of Firefox or Internet Explorer from your mobile device.

What you can’t do is stream video, transfer photos or other files from your remote PC to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, or use the remote printing function.

For those features you can pay for an in-app subscription update to LogMeIn Pro which costs $40 per year. Or you can make a one-time payment of $100 for the LogMeIn Ignition app.

This new freemium model is similar to the way LogMeIn’s web-based service works. You can install the LogMeIn client on any desktop computer you want to remote control for free and login from any supported web browser for free. But if you want advanced capabilities you need to pay.

Update 12/27/2011: It’s now possible to perform an untethered jailbreak on iPhone 3S, iPhone 4, iPad 1, or 3rd or 4th generation iPod touch. We’ve put together a step-by-step guide.

The iPhone Dev Team has released an updated version of the popular redsn0w utility for jailbreaking an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b adds native support for iOS 5.0.1, which means that you can jailbreak most devices without manually pointing the tool toward an older IPSW.

The latest tool also includes a number of other updates including a fix that allows you to use Apple iBooks on a jailbroken device running iOS 5.0 or 5.0.1.

Users with an iPhone 3GS and old bootroms can also now create custom IPSW files without blobs.

There are still two things you need to know before you try to use redsn0w 0.9.9b9b though:

The utility still doesn’t support the iPhone 4S or iPad 2.

This is still a tethered jailbreak, which means that if you ever need to reboot your device you’ll lose most functionality until you connect to a computer with a USB cable and run redsn0w again.

Hacker pod2g is still working on the first untethered jailbreak tools for iOS 5.0 and up and those tools should be available to the public soon. Until now, redsn0w 0.9.9b9b is probably a jailbreaker’s best friend.

Jailbreaking an iOS device allows users to access files and settings that would otherwise be unavailable. This lets you install apps that aren’t available in the App Store, change the boot logo, and make other changes.

Unfortunately you may also lose some functionality if you jailbreak. For instance you can’t download over-the-air operating system updates from Apple on a jailbroken device, and the latest jailbreak utility seems to cause problems with the Skype app for iOS.

Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b is available for Mac or Windows.

Every day dozens of new games are released for mobile phones and tablets — but every now and again you don’t want a new game. What you want is to relive a truly great classic game that you first played on a Playstation or computer.

Recently two of those classic games found their way to iOS and Android.

The first is Sonic CD, a Sonic the Hedgehog title from the 90s. Originally developed for the Sega CD, the game has since been ported to the Plyastation 2, GameCube, and PC. Now it’s available for $1.99 in the Android Market and iTunes App Store.

Next up we’ve got Grand Theft Auto III – a title that changed the way many people think about video games on a number of levels. GTA III was released for the PS2 in 2001 as a game that let you solve missions by driving, fighting, and problem solving in Liberty City, a fictional place that’s detailed enough to be a character in the story.

The game also pushed the boundaries of violent and sexual conduct in a mainstream video game.

Now GTA III is available for $4.99 from the App Store and Android Market.

Apple has released a new beta of iOS 5.1. The latest software fixes some bug form the last beta, but iOS 5.1 beta 2 also has one major improvement: Users can now delete individual pictures from Photo Stream.

Apple Photo Stream is an optional service which allows you to have photos taken with your device’s camera automatically uploaded to the iCloud service and synchronized across your devices. Now if you don’t want a particular photo you snap on your iPhone to show up on your iPad, you can delete it.

If you have a developer account you can download iOS 5.1 beta 2 from developer.apple.com.

The good news is that Apple is continuing to fix bugs and offer new and enhanced features. The bad news is that as iOS 5.1 nears release hackers are just starting to prepare a method for performing an untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1.

There’s a good chance that means one of two things:

Apple may fix the exploit used by the latest jailbreak tools so that iOS 5.1 cannot be jailbroken the same way as iOS 5.0.1 and earlier.

If Apple hasn’t fixed the exploit yet, jailbreak developers may want to wait until after iOS 5.1 is available to the public to make it tougher for Apple to patch the security hole before launch.

So either we’ll only have a viable untethered jailbreak for a very brief period… or we’ll have to wait a little longer for it to hit the streets.

Just a few days after iOS hacker pod2g announced that he’d performed an untethered jailbreak on a device running iOS 5.0, he’s managed to jailbreak an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1.

That means that if you’re planning to jailbreak you iPhone or iPod touch once the tools are released, it’s safe to update to iOS 5.0.1 now.

There are a few caveats. If you plan to carrier unlock your phone, you’ll still want to backup your SHSH blobs first. The exploit pod2g is using has also only been tested on older iOS devices. It probably won’t work on an iPhone 4S or iPad 2.

Pod2g hasn’t announced when he’ll release the tools for jailbreaking iOS 5.0.1 to the public.

Right now the only way to jailbreak a device running iOS 5.0 or newer is to perform a tethered jailbreak. That means that you need to connect your device to a computer with a USB cable and run some software on the PC to jailbreak the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. If you need to reboot your mobile device you’ll need to connect it to a computer and run the software again, otherwise most features will be inaccessible.

An untethered jailbreak removes this restriction. Once you jailbreak your device you can reboot it at any time without losing your jailbreak or the ability to use your mobile device — at least until you upgrade to iOS 5.0.2 or whatever the next version of Apple’s mobile operating system turns out to be.

Hackers have been jailbreaking iOS 5.0 since it was still in beta. But up until now only a tethered jailbreak was available. That means that anyone can jailbreak an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad to access hidden files and settings and install apps that aren’t available in the App Store. But if you need to reboot your device it will be pretty much unusable until you connect it to a computer with a USB cable and run the jailbreak utility again.

Now iOS hacker pod2g has posted a video showing a jailbroken iPod running iOS 5.0 — and in the video he reboots the device successfully.

In other words, he’s figured out how to perform an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.

That’s the good news. Here’s the not-as-good news:

Most iOS devices are currently running iOS 5.0.1 and pod2g hasn’t yet updated his tool to work with that version of the operating system.

The tools aren’t yet available to the public.

There’s no indication that this will work on the iPhone 4S or iPad 2. Both of those devices have proven more difficult to jailbreak than older iOS devices.

Still, this is the first time we’ve seen any evidence of an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0 and up, and pod2g says it shouldn’t be hard to add support for iOS 5.0.1.

Chrono Trigger has arrived for the iPhone and iPod Touch, bringing one of the most popular epic role playing games to iOS.

The game was originally released for the Super Nintendo in 1995. The iOS version features optimized graphics for the Retina display and touch controls. For example, in a battle, you can employ a the “slide and tap” control cut through enemies and select your targets.

Other exclusives include over 50 personnel combo attacks and two areas from the Nintendo DS version of the game: The Dimensional Vortex and the Lost Sanctum.

Created by Square Enix, the makers of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, the game naturally centers around its storyline. Chrono, the main character, must go back in time “through the dimensions” to find his friend Marle after an accident occurs with a new invention. As a result, Chrono travels through both the past and the future, an even encounters the end of time.

Chrono Trigger is available in the App Store for $9.99. If that seems a bit pricey for an iOS game, consider the words of a recent commenter on iTunes: “Not only did it revolutionized the RPG genre, it raised the bar so high it hasn’t been beaten since!”

OnLive is a service that lets you play video games by streaming them over the internet. We’re not talking about dinky Flash-based games here though. We’re talking about console-quality games that you’d normally need a Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 to play.

The company offers a box that you can connect to your TV to turn it into a game console, as well as a wireless remote control. This week the company launched new apps for iOS and Android that also turn your phone or tablet into a portable console-quality gaming system.

OnLive has been showing off the service since this summer, but now the company’s mobile apps are finally available for download from the App Store or the Android Market.

I took the service for a spin on my NOOK Tablet, and there’s a lot to like. The selection of games may not be all-inclusive, but it’s pretty good. And the games felt snappy and responsive even though I was basically using the tablet to control a game running on a remote server.

But video quality is inconsistent. I have a very fast internet connection, but from time to time the picture became pixelated. If you’ve ever tried watching satellite TV during a bad storm, you’ll have an idea of what OnLive looks like when your internet connection falters.

The mobile apps are available as free downloads, and once you sign up for an OnLive account you can stream free trials of many games, visit the “Arena” to watch other gamers play, or pay to play games.

You can rent some titles for up to 3 days for just a few dollars or purchase some games for around $20 so that you can play them at any time. New releases have prices closer to $50.

There’s also a PlayPack option which is sort of a Netflix-for-games bundle which allows you to play a large number of older titles for just $10 per month.

Microsoft has released a new app that lets you access your Xbox Live account on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.
You can view your achievements, send messages to your friends, read news about apps and games, and change your Xbox Live avatar.

Windows Phone 7 users can also control media playback on an Xbox from a phone. That feature is sadly missing from the iOS app. But pretty much everything else is there — including Windows Phone 7 Metro-style buttons at the bottom of the iPhone version of the app.

Apple has released a major update for its iBooks app for iOS. There’s a new full-screen mode that lets you read without viewing your status bar, a new night theme with a dark background and light text for reading at night, and new font selections.

There are also new covers for public domain books, support for pop-up footnotes, and performance improvements in iBooks 1.5.

Honestly, most of these features are already available in third party eBook apps such as Amazon’s Kindle or Stanza apps for iOS. But it’s nice to see Apple playing catch up.

Thanks to changes Apple made to its rules for third party apps this year, iBooks is also the only digital book app for the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad that includes an integrated bookstore. You need to use a web-based bookstore to purchase titles for the Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble NOOK, or Kobo apps.

You can download iBooks 1.5 for free from the App Store.

The BBC iPlayer delivers digital videos for popular BBC programming. When the iPlayer launcher, it was only available in a computer web browser… and in Britain. Since British residents pay a TV license fee to fund the BBC, the iPlayer service was free in Britain, but unavailable elsewhere.

Earlier this year the iPlayer went global… or at least partially global. The BBC launcher a global iPlayer app for the Apple iPad, but it was only available in Australia and select European countries.

Last week Canada was added to the list, and the US is expected to get iPlayer access next year.

Now it looks like the video streaming service is moving beyond the iPad. The BBC plans to launch an iPlayer app for iPhone and iPod touch on December 8th, 2011.

Viewers outside of the UK will have to pay a monthly fee to stream videos… just like competing services. But if you’re a fan of British TV and can’t find the most recent episodes of you favorite shows on Netflix or Hulu, the expansion of the iPlayer service could be good news.

Research in Motion is starting to look beyond the BlackBerry smartphone. For years the company’s mobile phones had dominated corporate settings, but Android and iOS devices have been chipping away at BlackBerry’s enterprise market. But RIM isn’t just a phone maker, and today the company introduced a forward-looking product that could help the company survive even if nobody ever buys a BlackBerry phone or tablet again.

It’s called BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, and it’s software that IT departments can use to manage a number of different mobile devices. It supports BlackBerry OS, iOS, and Android and gives IT managers a single console they can use to manage each device and platform.

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion supports the built-in features offered by each operating system. So if your phone doesn’t, for instance, support remote wipe capabilities, Mobile Fusion can’t help.

But the move will make it possible for businesses, government institutions, or other organizations that issue BlackBerry, iOS, and Android phones to staff to manage devices. It will offer the ability to activate devices, reset passwords, remotely lock or wipe a phone, or even push software or apps over the air.

Basically, it brings some of the features that had only been available in BlackBerry Enterprise to other platforms.

The new software should be available early in 2012. Obviously RIM still hopes customers buy BlackBerry OS devices, but it’s interesting to see the company push a product designed for the modern, multi-platform reality.

Apple has released a new beta of its operating system for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Developers can download iOS 5.1 beta from the Apple developer portal.

The list of changes isn’t all that informative, but the latest version of iOS appears to add some new voice dictation features, fix some bugs, and squash some security holes. It’s likely that Apple has also been working on bugs that have affected battery life for some users, although it’s not yet clear whether iOS 5.1 will deliver better battery life.

If you have a jailbroken device you’ll probably want to hold off on updating to iOS 5.1 until the iPhone Dev Team confirms that you can use redsn0w or a similar tool to jailbreak the new operating system.

Jailbreaking an iOS device allows users to access settings that are normally hidden, install apps that aren’t available from the App Store, and make other changes to an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. But Apple doesn’t exactly make it easy for users to jailbreak their devices.

Instead, a team of hackers has to search for a security hole in Apple’s software that makes it possible to insert code into the operating system. At the same time, Apple is looking for those same security holes and fixes them whenever possible. It’s kind of looking for a door that’s opened a crack, and sticking a jam in the door before Apple can close it again.

It makes sense that Apple wants to fix the security holes, because malicious hackers could use them to steal your data or make other changes to your device. But since they’re required by jailbreakers, the developers that create jailbreak utilities are constantly on the lookout for new exploits.

Now the folks behind the widely used Greenpois0n exploit are on the hunt for new exploits affecting iOS 5 — and they’re looking for help. The Chronic Dev Team has released a public beta of a tool called the Chronic Dev Crash Reporter. It does two things:

The tool prevents iTunes on your computer from sending software crash reports to Apple.

It instead sends the crash report data to the Chronic Dev Team.

The first step is designed to help make it a bit tougher for Apple to find security holes before the jailbreak developers do. The second step either shows the Chronic Dev Team the exploits, or at least lets them know which apps are crashing the most often so they can focus their efforts.

Chronic Dev Reporter is available as a public beta for Mac or Windows users.

Update: It looks like Apple doesn’t actually support subscription-based game content yet. The company has pulled Big Fish’s new app from the App Store.

You can subscribe to magazines, newspapers, music or video services in the App Store on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. And now you can also subscribe to some gaming content.

Bloomberg reports that the first company to extend Apple’s subscription services to the gaming world is Big Fish Games. Instead of paying a one-time price to download and play a game, customers can spend $6.99 per month to access dozens of games.

In other words, you don’t actually own any of the games you’re paying for, but with games normally running anywhere form 99 cents to $15, you could easily come out ahead with the Big Fish Games service if you play more than a few games per month. On the other hand, you if you stop paying, all of the games you’ve been playing go away, since you were essentially renting them rather than buying them.

Big Fish Games reportedly wants to bring its service to Android devices next.

Google has released an updated version of the native Gmail app for iOS. It’s now available as a free download from the App Store.

The Gmail app initially launched about two weeks ago, but Google pulled it almost immediately after users reported that push notifications weren’t working and an error message popped up whenever they first launched the app. I’ve been using the app on my iPod touch for the last few weeks despite these limitations, and I’ve found it to be generally faster and easier to use than the Gmail web app, if not quite as slick as the Gmail app for Android.

Gmail 1.0.2 for iOS supports touch-based gestures that let you refresh your inbox by swiping down, or view your labels by swiping from left to right. You can also send email messages with file attachments.

Google says future updates will improve the way images look, support for multiple accounts, and better notifications.

If you want to adjust the screen brightness, disable WiFi, or access most other settings on an iOS device you usually have to open the settings app and then navigate through a series of menus to find the feature you’re looking for.

Folks that have jailbroken devices have long been able to use apps like SBSettings to toggle various settings with a single-click from the home screen or app tray. But now there’s a way to do that without jailbreaking your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

IconSettings uses the Safari web browser to create shortcuts to a number of frequently used iOS settings. All you have to do is add browser shortcuts to your home screen for the features you want.

For instance, here’s how to add a shortcut to your screen brightness settings:

Open the Safari web browser on your mobile device.

Navigate to the IconSettings page at iPhoneZA

Scroll down until you see the list of Settings shortcuts and click the “Brightness” link.

It will open in a new window and a box will pop up asking if you want to “Open this page in ‘Settings’?”

Tap the Cancel button.

Tap the sharing button in your web browser (it’s a box with an arrow pointing outward).

Select the Add to Home Screen option.

From the following screen either tap the “Add” button, or rename the icon first if you like.

That’s it. An icon with a pretty graphic should show up on your home screen. You can drag several of these icons together to create a Settings folder if you like.

Now whenever you click on one of those icons, the web browser will load and then quickly redirect you to the appropriate page in your iOS settings.

The process isn’t quite as elegant as SBSettings or other jailbreak apps — but it won’t void your warranty. Unfortunately IconSettings shortcuts only work with iOS 5.0 and up.

Apple has opened the doors to its iTunes Match service. For $24.99 per year, users can synchronize their digital music collection with Apple’s iCloud service.

What that means is that you don’t need to upload your entire digital music collection to the cloud. Just download iTunes 10.5.1 on your Windows or Mac computer and it will scan your music and figure out if there’s already a copy of the same song on Apple’s servers.

As an added bonus, iTunes Match gives you 256kbps AAC DRM-free music, even if the file on your computer is a 96kpbs MP3 file. That’s because you’re not actually uploading most songs to iCloud. Instead, Apple just makes a note of which songs you own and matches your cute little music collection against Apple’s enormous collection which covers millions of songs.

If you do have tracks that aren’t already available, then Apple will upload them for you.

Theoretically the new service lets you match songs you’ve ripped from legally purchased CDs without having to buy those tracks again from iTunes. In practice, Apple doesn’t have any real way to distinguish songs you’ve ripped from songs you’ve downloaded from the internet, so those albums you grabbed from Napster 10 years ago are finally about to become legal.

Once you’ve signed up for iTunes Match you can access your songs on any Apple device. Technically you won’t be streaming your music… instead you can sign up for the service with your desktop computer and then be able to download and listen to any of your songs on your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, MacBook, or other Apple device for no additional fee.

Apple released iOS 5.0.1 this week and there’s already a way to jailbreak it. But there are a few things to keep in mind before you jailbreak your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

First, this is a tethered jailbreak, which means you’ll need to connect your device to a computer and run the software again anytime you need to reboot.

Second, you might not want to update to iOS 5.0.1 at all if you’re holding out hope for an untethered jailbreak. An exploit was discovered in iOS 5.0 which may be used in a future untethered jailbreak tool, but if you update now there’s no good way to roll back to iOS 5.0 so you may not be able to use the new tools once their available.

Third, there’s currently no way to jailbreak an iPhone 4S or iPad 2.

Fourth, the process is a bit more complex if you have a carrier unlocked device. You may want to wait to make sure that ultrasn0w is updated to support iOS 5.0.1 and you’ll need to preserve your older baseband before upgrading to iOS 5.0.1.

Finally, for now performing an untethered jailbreak requires you to manually select an older IPSW file. If you used iTunes to update your device to iOS 5 you should still have the correct IPSW on your computer. If not, you can download the iOS 5.0 IPSW for your device from the following links:

iPhone 4 (GSM)

iPhone 4 (CDMA)

iPhone 3GS

iPod touch 3rd generation

iPod touch 4th generation

iPad 1

Alright, if you’ve made it through the warnings, here’s how you can jailbreak your device after updating it to iOS 5.0.1.

1. Make sure you’re running iTunes 10.5 or higher for Windows or Mac. It’s probably a good idea to use iTunes to backup your device before you get started as well.

2. Make sure you’re running iOS 5.0.1 on your device. You can do this by connecting to iTunes and following the prompts to update your software, or by going into the settings on a iOS 5.0 device, choosing General, and then tapping the Software Update optio nto check for updates.

3. Download redsn0w 0.9.9b8 or higher for Windows or Mac from the iPhone Dev Team.

4. Unzip redsn0w to a folder on your computer, open that folder, and run redsn0w. In Windows you do this by double-clicking the redsn0w.exe file.

5. Choose the “Extras” option from the main menu.

6. From the following screen hit the “Select IPSW” option and navigate to the folder where you’ve stored your iOS 5.0 IPSW file. Future versions of redsn0w may make this step unnecessary.

7. Click OK to dismiss the message.

8. Click Back to return to the main menu.

9. Make sure your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad is turned of (press and hold the power button until the “slide to power off” image appears on the screen, and then slide your finger across to turn off your device).

10. Select the Jailbreak button to start the jailbreak process.

11. A message will appear letting you know that the kernel is being patch.

12. Select your options from the following screen. At the very least you’ll probably want to install the Cydia store.

13. Hit the Next button.

14. Hit the Next button again and then follow the on-screen instructions to enter DFU mode. In case you miss them, here’s what you need to do. While your device is turned off and connected to your computer:

Press and hold the power button for 3 seconds.

Without lifting your finger from the power button, press and hold the home button for 10 seconds.

Release the power button, but not the home button. Continue to hold that one for another 15 seconds.

15. That’s almost it. Redsnow should do the rest for you and apply the jailbreak. But you’re not quite done yet, because you still need to perform your first tethered boot.

16. Go back to the redsnow main screen, select the Extras option, and click “Just boot” and follow the on-screen instructions.” (You may also want to select “Choose IPSW” again first and select your iOS 5.0 IPSW file. Redsn0w didn’t recognize my build the first time I tried booting without taking that step).

Now you’re done! You should see the Cydia icon on your home screen.

If you ever need to reboot your device, you’ll need to connect your device to your computer and run redsnow’s “just boot” utility again. Otherwise you will be unable to boot at all.

Alternately, you could install an app called SemiTether from the Cydia Store. It will allow you to reboot your device and use your phone without tethering — but you will not have access to most of the device’s functions, so it’s a temporary fix at best.

It looks like the reports of Stanza’s death have been somewhat exaggerated. Today Amazon and Lexcycle released the first update to the popular iOS eBook app since February.

The update doesn’t add any new features, but it does fix one glaring problem: the previous version of Stanza didn’t work with iOS 5. The new version does.

Stanza has long been one of the most versatile eBook apps available for the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

The free app makes it easy to download free eBooks from popular digital book marketplaces including Project Gutenberg, Feedbooks, and SmashWords. You can also add custom catalogs, or import books from a computer using iTunes or simply by emailing EPUB files to yourself and opening them in Stanza on your mobile device.

Stanza’s reading view provides more customization options than nearly any other eBook app I’ve used. You can choose from a variety of themes, have day and night themes, or create custom color schemes. The app lets you adjust sizes and fonts, and set up custom line and paragraph spacing, margins, or tweak the page turn effects and settings.

While Bluefire Reader offers a few features that you don’t get from Stanza, including support for Adobe DRM, Bluefire isn’t nearly as customizeable – and since upgrading from iOS 4.3 to iOS 5 I’ve noticed that Bluefire is also less responsive than it used to be.

Stanza is available as a free download from the App Store.

Update: OK, the reports of Stanza’s death were premature… but not completely wrong. Amazon tells MacWorld that today’s update will be Stanza’s last. That’s a shame, because it really does providing a better reading experience than any other eBook app I’ve used.

Apple has released iOS 5.0.1 for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. The update promises better battery life, adds multitasking gestures to the original iPad, and fixes several bugs.

Update: While some users are reporting battery life improvements, others aren’t. Apple’s not done yet though. The company is reportedly continuing to investigate issues.

The new software is available as a free update for the iPhone 3GS through iPhone 4S, 3rd generation or newer iPod touch, and all iPad models.

You can download the update through iTunes — or if you’re already running iOS 5.0 you can grab an over-the-air update on your device. Just open the Settings app, choose “General,” and then select “Software Update” to check for updates.

I didn’t see the software update right away on my device, but I rebooted my (recently dried out) iPod touch and tried again, and the update was available.

This is an incremental update, which means you only have to download 40.1MB to install the new software.

Jailbreakers beware

If you’re waiting for an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 you might want to hold off on applying today’s update. Hackers have recently discovered an update in iOS 5.0 which may be used to enable an untethered jailbreak.

Unfortunately that exploit is likely patched in iOS 5.0.1. There’s also currently no easy way to downgrade a device from iOS 5.0.1 to iOS 5.0 — so until an exploit is found for the new operating system or a downgrade path is developed you should probably stay away from the update if you want to use the new jailbreak utilities when they’re available.

The good news is you can already perform a tethered jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1. That means you’ll need to connect your device to your computer and run the jailbreak software again any time you reboot your device, but at least you should get better battery life.

When you use the on-screen keyboard on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad Apple’s software will use attempt to automatically correct your spelling mistakes. Sometimes this feature can be a lifesaver, but sometimes you want to type “its” instead of “it’s” and it’s kind of a pain to go back and fix things.

Now it looks like Apple is working on adding a bar above the keyboard which will show auto-correct suggestions as you type. You can tap on any of those words once they appear to save a few keystrokes — or to choose the word you really wanted, but which Apple’s software decided was the wrong choice.

The new feature is already baked into iOS 5 — but it’s not enabled by default. It’s possible that Apple doesn’t think it’s ready for prime time yet. Still, if you want to enable the auto-correct bar, you can do that.

Developer Sonny Dickson has posted instructions. The good news is that you don’t need to jailbreak your iDevice to turn on the auto-correction bar. The less good news is that the process is a little tricky.

You need to backup your device with iTunes, download a third party app called iBackupBot, modify your backup file, and then restore your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad from the modified backup.

In case something goes horribly wrong, it’s probably a good idea to keep a backup of your original backup as well.

The Google Android keyboard, as well as a number of third party keyboards for Android have offered a similar feature for a while, but this is the first time we’ve seen the option in iOS.

Apple has been building the ability to take panoramic photos into the default iOS camera app — but the company hasn’t officially released the feature yet. But Conrad Kramer discovered that the feature is already baked into iOS 5.0… it’s just not enabled by default.

In order to enable support for panoramic photos you’ll need to jailbreak your device and download a utility called Firebreak from the Cydia Store. Alternately, if you want to make the change manually, you need to change the key “EnableFirebreak” to “yes” in com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist — but I suspect it’s easier for most people just to download the app from Cydia.

iPhone Dev Team member chpwn is responsible for submitting the Firebreak app to the Cydia store.

In order to shoot a panaromic photo, you just choose panorama mode, tap the camera button, and move your camera from left to right until you’re done capturing your image.

It’s only been two days since Apple released the first beta version of iOS 5.0.1 to developers, and already there’s an update. This afternoon iOS 5.0.1 beta 2 was released to developers.

You’ll need a $99 developer account to download the update, but if you have one you can grab the new software for your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad from developer.apple.com. It’s also available as an over-the-air update which you can download over WiFi.

For the most part iOS 5.0.1 is aimed at improving battery life. Many users had noted that iOS 5 was draining their batteries more quickly than iOS 4. The software update also brings multitasking gesture support to the original iPad, and a few other bug fixes and performance improvements.

The OS update is available for the iPhone 3GS and up, 3rd generation or newer iPod touch, or first or second generation iPad.

Apple released iOS 5.0.1 beta on November 2nd… and a few hours later the folks at the iPhone Dev Team confirmed that you could use the latest redsn0w tools to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1.

There’s a new version redsn0w which natively recognizes the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system. Just download redsn0w 0.9.9b8 for Mac or Windows to get started.

This is still a tethered jailbreak, which means that you’ll need to connect your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad to a computer and run redsn0w again if you need to reboot. Otherwise you’ll get stuck at the boot logo (unless you use SemiTether, in which case you’ll just lose the ability to use many of your apps).

Apple iOS 5.0.1 beta is designed to squash bugs that had been affecting battery life. It also adds multitasking gesture support to the original iPad and fixes a few other bugs. It’s available for users with Apple developer accounts at developer.apple.com.

Apple will probably push out the update to the public within the next few weeks.

Just a few weeksafter releasing iOS 5 to the public, Apple is preparing to launch a minor update to its latest mobile operating system. Today the company released iOS 5.0.1 beta to developers.

The software update is primarily designed to fix bugs. One of the highest profile changes is a fix for bugs that are affecting battery life. Some iOS users have reported lower battery life since upgrading to iOS 5, and many iPhone 4S users have complained that the latest iPhone doesn’t live up to its battery life estimates.

Other changes in iOS 5.0.1 beta include support for multitasking gestures on the original iPad, improved voice recognition for Australian accents, and a bug fix for Documents in the Cloud.

If you have a developer account you can download the latest beta for supported iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad models from developer.apple.com.

It’s been about four years since the iPhone hit the market, and more than three years since the App Store opened for business. So it’s about time Google finally got around to releasing a native Gmail app for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad… which is exactly what the company did today.

Update: The app has been pulled from the App Store temporarily while Google fixes a bug.

Update 11/16/11: And now it’s back and everything seems to be working properly.

While Google’s mobile web app for Gmail is pretty good, the new app is faster, offers a cleaner look, and adds a number of features that you don’t get with the web app.

You can download Gmail for iOS for free from the App Store.

The Gmail app supports push notifications and audio alerts — or at least it’s supposed to. Push notifications don’t appear to work yet. Second, it allows you to autocomplete addresses by grabbing contacts from your local address book as well as your Gmail account.

The Gmail app includes touch-based gestures including the ability to refresh your inbox by pulling down on the screen. You can swipe from left-to-right on the screen to navigate through your folders and Priority Inbox settings. You can also now attach images to an email message.

When you use the Gmail app on an iPad, there’s a split-pane view that lets you see a list of messages on the left while viewing a thread on the right.

Google’s Gmail app for iOS is long overdue… but after playing around with it for a few minutes, I’m tempted to say it was almost worth the wait. If you were expecting an iOS port of the Gmail app for Android, that’s not what you’ll find here. Instead you get a high quality email app which looks and feels like it was designed for the iPhone, and which offers a much better experience than you’ll get when using the Safari web browser to check your email from your phone.

Opera launched new versions of its mobile web browsers for pretty much every mobile operating system imaginable today… except Android. And that’s only because the Android apps received the same update a few weeks ago.

But if you’re using iOS, BlackBerry, S60, or J2ME you can grab Opera Mini 6.5 for your device. Opera Mobile 11.5 is also available for S60. And MeeGo users can check out a new Opera Mobile Labs 11.5 release for tablets and netbooks.

The key difference between Opera Mobile and Mini is that Opera Mini relies on remote servers to compress data before sending web pages and other content to your device, while Opera Mobile uses your device’s hardware to render web content (although you can turn on Opera Turbo mode to enable the same sort of compression).

The biggest change in the new versions is a tool that helps you visualize how much data you’ve used — and how much data you’ve saved by using Opera’s compression technology. Opera has also made it easier to bookmark a website quickly by tapping a star in the URL bar. Sure, that feature is pretty common in desktop web browsers, but you don’t see it on many mobile browsers yet.

Apple’s GarageBand app for iOS lets users create and edit music on a mobile device. When the app launched last year it was an iPad exclusive. But now Apple has released a major update which allows GarageBand to run on an iPhone or iPod touch as well.

You can use the app to tap out tunes on a virtual keyboard, strum a virtual guitar, tap beats on a virtual drum kit, or use dozens of other virtual instruments. You can also mix songs using up to 8 tracks, create loops, trim audio, or apply other effects. You can either save your song as a digital music file or send a project to a Mac to continue editing in the desktop version of GarageBand.

GarageBand 1.1 for iOS is a universal app that runs most recent iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad models running iOS 4.3 and up. The update also adds new features such as 3/4 or 6/8 time signatures, custom chords for Smart Instruments, and new export quality settings for AAC and AIFF files.

GarageBand for iOS is available from the App Store for $4.99. It weighs in at a hefty 501MB.

Gmail mobile web app

There’s a rumor going around that Google has finally developed an official Gmail app for iOS and submitted it to Apple for approval. It will allow users to send and receive email without firing up a web browser — and it will support push email, which is something the web app simply can’t do.

Don’t get me wrong, Google’s mobile web apps for Gmail, Google Reader, Google Calendar, and other services are excellent demonstrations of just what you can do with a modern mobile web browser.

But a web app doesn’t collect messages for reading offline when the browser is closed. It doesn’t send you notifications when new messages appear. And even if you link the native iOS Mail app to your Gmail account you don’t get Push notifications — or the ability to use Gmail features such as Priority Inbox, starred messages, or labels.

MG Siegler reports that those are likely just some of the features that will be included in the native Gmail app once it’s approved… if it’s approved.

When Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007, Steve Jobs was almost giddy with excitement over the prospect of the web browser as the most important app. If developers wanted to write apps for the iPhone, all they had to do was create web sites that could be accessed in Mobile Safari.

It didn’t take long for developers to insist that the browser wasn’t good enough, and that they wanted a native software developer kit, and the following year Apple caved, launched the App Store, and the rest is history.

Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that it’s taken Google four years to jump on board with a native Gmail app. Google shares Jobs’ early vision of web apps replacing native apps, even though the company has been building native apps for Android for the last few years. But the truth is that there are still some things that work best in a native app which is more tightly integrated with the operating system than a browser-based app.

Update: The Gmail app for iOS is now available for download.

I’ve never really gotten the point of the Apple Store app for iOS. I mean, do you really find yourself shopping for iPhones, iPads, and other Apple products so often that you need to install an app on your mobile device instead of just visiting the website?

But now it looks like Apple could be rolling out an update that will allow you to use the Apple Store app in a novel way in bricks and mortars stores. According to MacRumors, you’ll be able to use it for self-checkout.

In other words, you walk into an Apple Store. Pick up an item off the shelf and scan it with your phone’s camera and your iTunes Store account will be billed. You can now walk out with your item without ever going up to the cash register.

While you’ll be able to pick up cables, cases, and other accessories this way, big ticket items will still hang out in the stock room. You won’t be able to walk out with an iMac or a MacBook Air without asking for assistance. But you will still be able to pay on your device and just stop a staff member to help you collect your item before leaving.

I suspect that friendly employee standing near the front of the store might also want you to flash your digital receipt before you exit, but if the rumor is true, it’s a pretty remarkable way to blur the lines between digital shopping and real-world shopping.

Siri is one of the most talked-about features of the new iPhone 4S. Sure, Apple’s latest phone also has a dual core processor which offers better performance than the chips found in the iPhone 4 or the latest iPod touch. But Apple’s new voice-assist service which lets you ask your phone questions — and get real answers is the show-stopping feature that makes the iPhone 4S special.

But it turns out that there’s really no technical reason Siri couldn’t run on older iOS devices. Apple just doesn’t offer it for any device other than the iPhone 4S.

That’s despite the fact that Siri was a standalone, third-party app until Apple bought the company that makes the software and incorporated the technology into iOS 5.

In fact, hackers have been trying to figure out how to port Siri to run on older iPhones and other iOS devices for the last few weeks — and now Steven Troughton-Smith has managed to get it working.

Up until now, we’ve seen a few folks get the software to start running — but since Siri needs to contact Apple’s servers to actually answer your questions, it wasn’t fully functional.

Troughton-Smith managed to grab some files from an iPhone 4S, copy them to an iPhone 4 and show Siri working perfectly.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to do this without copying files from Apple’s latest phone, and distributing those files without Apple’s permission would pretty much be an act of piracy. In other words, Troughton-Smith won’t be making the files available via Cydia or any other source.

But he does promise to post instructions for anyone that wants to follow in his footsteps.

Siri also reportedly works on the 4th generation iPod touch — but the microphone on that device isn’t as good as on the iPhone 4, which means you have to speak louder if you want the app to hear you.
