Documents To Go is free from Amazon today ($14.99 off)

Documents To Go

Amazon seems to be making a habit of offering office suites for Android for free. Every day the Amazon Appstore for Android offers one paid app free of charge. A few weeks ago that free app was OfficeSuite Pro and last week the company followed up with QuickOffice Pro. Today its DataViz Documents To Go that’s available for free from Amazon.

What these three apps all have in common is the ability to view, edit, or create Microsoft Office documents including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. They also let you view PDF files.

They also all happen to retail for $14.99, which means you may have saved $45 if you managed to tap the “get app” button three times over the last month or so.

When Amazon puts an app on sale you can add it to your account while it’s free, but you don’t necessarily have to download and install it today. I’m sure Amazon hopes this gives you incentive to visit the Appstore every day to see what’s new, but it also gives you plenty of incentive to grab Documents To Go today even if you’re not sure you need it.

What’s actually on sale today is the license key for the full version of Documents To Go. You still need to download the standalone Documents To Go app, but that version is always free, and the license key lets you unlock premium features.

Note that if your device came with a free version of Documents To Go preloaded though, this unlock key may not work for you.

DataViz cancels plans for Documents To Go for WebOS

Documents To Go from DataViz is a mobile application that lets you view and edit office docs including spreadsheets, text documents, presentations, and PDF files on mobile devices. DataViz makes version of Documents to Go for BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, iOS, Android, and Palm OS classic, as well as Maemo. The company had planned to launch a WebOS version for newer Palm phones as well, but today announced that it has canceled WebOS development.

WebOS actually ships with apps for viewing office documents, which are based on Docs To Go technology, and DataViz had planned to simply replace the default viewers with more powerful versions for users who purchased the app. But the company got tired of waiting for Palm to provide the tools necessary to make those changes and has decided to simply focus on other platforms.

DataViz also notes that another developer is apparently working on a fully functional document editing suite for WebOS, so hopefully users won’t have to wait too long to get similar functionality. According to PreCentral, it looks like QuickOffice could be the company developing that app.

DataViz launches Documents To Go office suite for Maemo 5

Documents To Go has been allowing smartphone and PDA users to open and edit Microsoft Office documents for ages. The software is available for BlackBerry, iOS, Android, WebOS, and Windows Mobile. And now the company has launched a version for Maemo 5, which means you can run Documents To Go on the Nokia N900.

The Maemo app lets you view and edit Word and Excel files, with support for Microsoft Office 97 through Office 2010 files. There’s also support for password protected files.

The original formatting stays intact, and the app supports multiple zoom levels to make it easier to view large documents on a small screen.

A full version of DataViz Documents To Go for Maemo will set you back $29.99, but there’s a 30-day free trial download available as well. There’s also a $9.99 version that lets you view (but not edit) documents.
