TiVo app for Android lets you control your DVR from your phone

TiVo has finally released an official Android app which you can use as a remote control for your TiVo digital video recorder. In fact, the remote control function actually looks like a TiVo remote. But that’s just one of the things you can do with the free app.
You can also browse a 14-day program guide, schedule and manage recordings, view cast and crew information, and comment about shows on Facebook or Twitter.
The app also lets you search for on-demand content from Netflix, Amazon Instant Video or Blockbuster.
While the TiVo app is optimized for smartphones and tablets with 7 inch displays, it should run on any device with Android 2.1 or newer.
The new app looks an awful lot like the TiVo app for iOS which was released in July, 2012.

Unofficial TiVo app for Android lets you control your DVR
TiVo offers an iPhone and iPad app that let you control your TiVo set-top-box from a mobile device. You can schedule recordings, browse for program listings, or view show information using the app. There’s no official TiVo app for Android yet, but an independent developer has released an open source clone of the iOS apps called TiVo Commander. It’s available as a free download from the Android Market.
The Android app only works with a TiVo Premiere set top box. But if you happen to have that model, you can use the new app to record shows, browse recorded programs, view movie or TV show credits, see suggestions for similar titles, and search for actors, movies, or TV shows.
You can also use TiVo Commander as a remote control using on-screen buttons.
The unofficial Android app isn’t quite as pretty or polished as the official iOS apps. But it’s free and it’s available now.
Earlier this summer Virgin Media in the UK released an Android app that lets subscribers control their set-top boxes. That may provide an early look at an official TiVo app to come, but so far TiVo has yet to launch its own Android app.

TiVo app for iOS now supports the iPhone, iPod touch
TiVo has been offering an iPad app which lets you schedule recordings, view program guides, find online video, or read cast bios and other information while you’re watching TV. Now the company has made the TiVo app a universal app, which means you can run it on an iPhone or iPod touch as well.
The TiVo app for iOS is available as a free download from the App Store.
It’s designed to work with a TiVo Premier digital video recorder, but the latest version also adds limited support for TiVo Series3 and TiVo HD set-to-boxes as well as RCN Premiere and Suddenlink DVRs. You can also now use the app in guest mode if you want to explore the features but you don’t actually have a supported DVR.
First TiVo app for Android appears… in the UK… for Virgin Media customers
TiVo offers a pretty nifty iPad app that allows subscribers to view program guides and schedule recordings on their digital video recorders. So far TiVo hasn’t released anything like it for Android users — but Virgin Media has.
The UK-based TV provider offers TiVo service to subscribers, and now customers can download a free app from the Android Market which functions as a program guide and recording scheduler. You can use the app to search for programs and set your DVR to record a show even if you’re nowhere near your TV. The app supports individual recordings and Season Passes.
That’s about it for the functionality though. The iPad app also lets you use your tablet as a remote control — you can start playing a program on your TV by flicking your finger on the iPad. It also shows detailed cast and crew information and lets you search Netflix, Amazon, and other video-on-demand offerings. Those features are missing in Virgin’s TV Guide app for now.
There’s no word on if or when TiVo will launch an official version of the app for customers in the US and elsewhere.

TiVo prepping new iPhone, Android apps

TiVo has long been rumored to be readying some new iOS and Android companion apps, but CEPro magazine has shed more light on the upcoming software.
TiVo’s Bard Williams tells the magazine the new apps offer an attractive new user interface, a multi-touch remote control, the ability to manage Season Pass recordings, and view information about a TV show all while you continue to watch TV. In other words, you can use the app as a secondary display for your TiVo without minimizing the video playing on your TV. You can also perform basic tasks when over the internet when you’re aware from home.
TiVo launched a free iPad app earlier this year. It acts as a simple remote control for the Premiere box. The new apps will finally offer TiVo users with the ability to access their prized Season Passes, as well as deeper Premier Box integration. All we’re waiting for now is a timeframe and scheduling of their release.

Cablevision launches iPad app with 300 channels of live TV
Leave it to Cablevision… True to form, the company has thrown caution to the wind and launched the full fledged iPad app cable subscribers have been waiting for. It offers more than 300 channels of live television and more than 2,000 titles of video on demand content with more on the way.
The app also offers a searchable program guide, the ability to schedule DVR recordings, parental controls, and closed captioning.
While other television providers attempt broker deals and succumb to studio pressure, Cablevision has simply opened the firehose. Your iPad is your television. As with any set-top box, content is delivered from Cablevision’s head end into one’s home and doesn’t rely on Internet delivery.
Cablevision’s Optimum for iPad is available as a free download from iTunes, although you’ll clearly need to be a Cablevision subscriber to use the app.
Verizon FiOS DVR iPhone App Updated
Verizon pushed out a significant FiOS TV DVR Manager iPhone app update this morning, bring us up to version 1.5.
Most notable upon first launch is that the previous horrid graphics have been replaced with a polished UI that mirrors what’s found in their latest DVR update (IMG 1.9, slowly rolling out). Remote scheduling and DVR recording management are still present… but much more attractive. Also, in the interface category, the grid guide can now be viewed in landscape orientation.
In terms of new functionality, Verizon has ported my favorite iPad feature down to the iPhone (or iPod Touch) in allowing you to see what other folks in your region are watching — nice to have if you’re still a channel surfer, as I am.
TiVo’s iPad app now available
TiVo’s iPad app, announced in November, is now available as a free download from the App Store.
I’ve been using the app for several weeks now, and I quite like it. Whereas TiVo has been lagging the competition in providing this sort of functionality, they may have just leapfrogged nearly all contenders in producing both a beautiful and functional television companion. Of course, it’s only a companion for TiVo Premiere owners. But perhaps there are a few more this week given that amazing $65 Woot deal.
The app itself is quite comprehensive. Who needs picture-in-guide when you can manage just about every meaningful element of your TiVo from an iPad without interrupting the television viewing experience. Remote control? Check. Guide? Check. Season Passes, To Do List, Now Playing? Check, check, check.
