LogeMeIn‘s mobile apps for iOS and Android let you login to a remote computer to run applications, access files, and perform other functions that can make your smartphone or tablet feel like a full-fledged computer. But at $30, LogMeIn is kind of expensive for a mobile app.

Now the company has released a free version of its iOS app that offers basic remote desktop functionality.

You can use the free app to login to a Mac or PC using the free app to run programs. For instance you can view documents stored on your PC or surf the web in a full version of Firefox or Internet Explorer from your mobile device.

What you can’t do is stream video, transfer photos or other files from your remote PC to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, or use the remote printing function.

For those features you can pay for an in-app subscription update to LogMeIn Pro which costs $40 per year. Or you can make a one-time payment of $100 for the LogMeIn Ignition app.

This new freemium model is similar to the way LogMeIn’s web-based service works. You can install the LogMeIn client on any desktop computer you want to remote control for free and login from any supported web browser for free. But if you want advanced capabilities you need to pay.

LogMeIn Ignition has plenty of company in the iOS App Store from other remote control apps. TeamViewer, for instance, is a personal favorite of mine. With its latest update, however, Ignition adds one killer feature that gives it an additional edge: direct remote transfers for photos and videos.

Establish a connection to your host machine (say, your desktop computer) in Ignition, then open the remote file browser. You can then select the files you want to copy (or move) to your iPhone or iPad and drop them into a local folder. Once transferred over, you’re free to view them in the built-in the Photos app or your favorite media player.

File transfers work on both Wi-Fi and 3G connections, so take care — pulling down a big HD video clip from your PC or Mac at home could chew up a considerable portion of your monthly cellular data allowance.

LogMeIn Ignition is a mobile app which lets you remote control a desktop or laptop computer from your phone or tablet. The company added a feature earlier this year that also lets you transfer files from your PC or Mac to your iPhone or iPad — but not the other way around. Now it looks like LogMeIn is getting ready to fix that.

TUAW reports that the company has submitted a new version of the LogMeIn Ignition app to the App Store and it should be available soon. The update will also do a better job of organizing files you transfer from your PC to your mobile device.

The current version of LogMeIn Ignition is available from the App Store for $29.99. That’s a pretty steep price for an iOS app, but if you’re already a heavy LogMeIn user it might be worth it. The company also offers free and paid software that lets you remotely login to a computer using a web browser.

Join.me is a dead simple scree sharing utility that lets you share your Windows or Mac desktop with other users. Just download and run a 1MB file and the app will give you a code that you can share with anyone. They can visit the join.me web site and enter the code to see your desktop, chat with you, call in to a conference line, or view a list of participants.

The service comes from the folks at LogMeIn, who have been cranking out excellent remote desktop software for the past few years. What makes join.me different from other LogMeIn apps is the ease of setup (it literally just takes a few seconds), and the fact that while you can show other participants your desktop, they can’t control your PC. This makes join.me a great tool for providing software demos or PowerPoint presentations, but it’s not going to let you login to your grandmother’s computer to fix problems.

There is a “share control” button in the desktop interface but it didn’t work for me. I’m not sure if this is because the only participant in my test was on an iPod touch, or if you need a pro account to share control. The join.me service is available for free, although you can also sign up for a pro account with user management, meeting tools, and other goodies.

Now LogMeIn has launched a join.me app for iOS. While you can’t use it to share your iOS desktop, you can use it to login to a join.me session on any desktop computer. Just enter the appropriate code and you should see the desktop within seconds. You can zoom in and out or hit the on-screen controls to bring up a chat window, view participants, or call-in details.

Join.me for iOS is available as a free download from the App Store, and supports the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. An Android version is also in development.

LogMeIn is a service that lets you remotely log into a PC or Mac from any computer with a web browser and internet connection. You just install a client on your desktop and you’re good to go. The company offers free and paid service. While you can login to a PC and control it remotely with a free account, Pro users can also transfer files, listen to music from their desktop, and perform other advanced actions.

The company also offers mobile software called LogMeIn Ignition that lets you login to your computer using a mobile device such as an iPhone. And after a few months of beta testing, LogMeIn Ignition for Google Android officially launched today. It’s available for download from the Android Market for $29.99.

If that price seems a little steep, you might want to check out Wyse PocketCloud, which is available for just $14.99. But I personally find the LogMeIn Ignition user interface easier to use.

It seems like just 39 days ago that I first caught wind of a LogMeIn client for Google Android… oh right, because it was. At the time, the software was in private beta testing, but now it’s available as a public beta which means anyone can download LogMeIn Ignition from the Android Market.

LogMeIn allows you to access any PC or Mac computer remotely. All you have to do is install the LogMeIn software on your primary computer, and then login through a web browser to control your computer. LogMeIn Ignition is the company’s mobile client, which lets you login to your computer using an iPhone or Android smartphone.

Clearly, most PCs have higher resolution screens than smartphones. But LogMeIn Ignition will scale your desktop so that you can see the whole thing on your Android phone. Of course, you might find it a bit difficult to navigate this way, but you can pinch to zoom in and out or activate a scale bar that lets you zoom in and out so that you can enter text, click on icons, and perform other actions.

Because you’ll probably spend most of your time zoomed in, LogMeIn Ignition uses an interesting means of navigation. Instead of moving the mouse cursor around by clicking on different parts of your phone’s screen, the cursor stays in the center of the screen. What you move is your desktop. Just drag until the cursor is hovering over the area you want to click, and then tap the screen to click or tap with two fingers to double-click. If your phone doesn’t support multitouch gestures, you can click the mouse icon to switch the default action from left click to right.

You can also pull up an on-screen keyboard to enter text or drag two fingers across the screen to scroll in a web browser or other application that supports scrolling.

LogMeIn Ignition for Android is available as a free download while in beta. The beta period expires on May 31, 2010. There’s no wowrd on how much the full version will cost, but the company charges $29.99 for its iPhone app.

The app lets you log onto any computer that has the LogMeIn software installed, assuming you have the login information. LogMeIn Ignition shows you an image of your remote desktop on your mobile device and lets you interact with it using an on-screen keyboard or mouse.

LogMeIn offers free and Pro accounts. Both let you take control of a remote desktop. But the Pro version allows file transfer, sound, and a few other features. The mobile LogMeIn Ignition apps for iPhone and Android can work with either LogMeIn Free or Pro, but the LogMeIn iPhone app costs $29.99. It’s likely that the Android version will have a similar price tag.
