Seesmic social networking app drops support for BlackBerry
Popular social networking service Seesmic allows users to interact with your Twitter and Facebook accounts across a number of platforms. There’s a web app, desktop apps for Windows or Mac, and a line of mobile apps for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone 7. There’s also a BlackBerry app, but Seesmic has announced that it will drop support for that platform soon.
While Research in Motion’s BlackBerry platform is certainly struggling to keep up with the rapid growth of iOS and Android, there are still a lot of Blackberry users out there, so Seesmic’s advice that “those effected [sic] by this change” try out Seesmic for other mobile platforms seems a bit… silly. I doubt many people will trade in their BlackBerry for an Android phone just to keep using Seesmic.
That said, it seems clear that plenty of people are trading in their Blackberries for other devices which is probably part of the reason Seesmic has decided to focus on other platforms where the app is more popular.

Seesmic, Plume social media clients get Android 3.0 tablet makeovers
Android developers are starting to ramp up development of tablet-friendly versions of their apps to take advantage of the extra screen real estate and new menu options available in Android 3.0 Honeycomb. While there are still a relatively small number of apps designed specifically for Android tablets, it looks like the number is growing, and the developers of two popular social media clients for Android are getting in on the action.
This week Seesmic started showing off a new tablet version of its Twitter and Facebook client, while Twitter client Plume launched a public beta of a Honeycomb app.
The new version of Seesmic takes advantage of the new fragments component of Android 3.0 Honeycomb, breaking up the screen into three areas. You get a menu on the left, a timeline in the middle, and a detailed message view, complete with web pages or other media, on the right.
The new version of Plume has a new Android 3.0-optimized user interface, changes the URL shortener and image uploading services, and has a new dark theme option, among other changes. In order to try the new version of Plume you’ll have to uninstall any existing version of the app already on your device first.
Seesmic Facebook and Twitter app adds home screen shortcuts
Seesmic for Android lets you manage Facebook, Twitter, and several other social networking services on your phone by viewing updates, receiving notifications, and sharing updates with your contacts. Now Seesmic 1.7 for Android is out, and it adds a number of new features including the ability to place shortcuts on your home screen for a number of actions including:
- Accounts
- Message composer
- Searches
- Lists
- Facebook pages
- Salesforce Chatter groups
Seesmic for Android gets Facebook integration, new widgets, TwitLonger support

The latest version of Seesmic for Android is out, and the biggest change is that the social networking app now supports Facebook. That means you can use one app to keep up with the latest news from your Facebook and Twitter contacts. The app also supports Google Buzz and Salesforce Chatter.
There’s no unified news feed, which means you’ll have to choose which account you want to view. But you can use Seesmic to access multiple Twitter of Facebook accounts if you like.
The Facebook view offers the ability to check your news feed, view your friends list, see pages you like, and access your Facebook wall. You can also use the app to “like,” share, or comment on updates, view your friends’ profiles, or post your own status updates.
Seesmic has added support for TwitLonger to the Twitter portion of the app, allowing you to post messages that are longer than 140 characters (although your followers will have to click a link to read the whole thing).
Seesmic 1.6 also supports inline comments for Salesforce Chatter and Google Buzz, the Goo.gl URL shortener, and allows you to see a list of people that have retweeted a tweet.
There are also new home screen widgets, allowing you to set up separate Seesmic widgets for Facebook, Twitter, Chatter, or Buzz.
I’ve tested Seesmic a few times in the past, but I’ve never found it to offer many features that made it more valuable than the official Facebook or Twitter apps for Android. But Twitter has become a bit of a resource hog recently, taking up well over 15MB of data on my phone. After playing around with Seesmic a bit today, it’s using just 4MB of disk space, so I’m going to test it for at least a few days to see if it continues to use less storage than the official Twitter app.
Seesmic for Android is available as a free download from the Android Market. The app supports Google Android 1.5 and up.
New crop of Windows Phone 7 apps pop up
Microsoft isn’t expected to officially launch its new Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system until October, but the developer tools for WP7 went final this week. And developers have been showing off apps built for the new operating system left and right.
The folks behind the Seesmic social networking client for Facebook and Twitter are showing off a preview, and it looks absolutely gorgeous. You can check out a demo video after the break. It takes advantage of the Windows Phone 7 user interface with tiles, scrolling menus, and swiping action to move between different elements.
Microsoft is also showing of a demo of new Windows Phone 7 apps for Netflix, Twitter, Flixter, OpenTable and Travelocity. I’ve posted that video below as well, but you’ll need Silverlight to view it.
The apps have the same basic functionality as their counterparts for iPhone, Android, and other mobile platforms. But like Seesmic, these new apps all take advantage of Windows Phone 7 UI elements. That makes the Netflix app look almost like the Zune video player for Windows Phone 7, with thumbnail icons along the right side of the Watch Instantly menu and movie genres across the top, allowing you to scroll from category to category.

Seesmic launches Twitter, Facebook client for iPhone

Sure, Twitter just launched an official iPhone client a few days ago, so you might think there’s not much room for yet-another-Twitter-client for the iPhone. But today Seesmic introduced an app that makes a pretty strong case that there is still room for competition.
That’s because Seesmic for iPhone isn’t just a Twitter app. It’s also an iPhone app. And thanks to Ping.fm integration, you can also use it to update your status on a ton of social networks including MySpace, LinkedIn, Flickr, Blogger, and Tumblr.
When you launch Seesmic the first time, you’re greeted with a series of four boxes. Click one to set up a new Facebook, Twitter, or Ping.fm account. You can also create a box for Twitter trending topics or search topics. Unfortunately, this is the only way to search Twitter. That means that if you’re in the Twitter portion of the app, you have to go back to the home screen to conduct a Twitter search.
Aside from that quirk, the app has all the features you’d expect from a Twitter client, including timeline updates, replies, retweets, direct messages, and access to your profile. You can also compose messages with links, map links, location information, or pictures from your phone.
The Facebook portion of the app is a bit more limited. Basically it just shows you your Facebook News Feed. You can compose updates, and you can click on any item to leave comments, see comments left by others, or click a “like” button. But you can’t see your friend list, applications, or other information.
You can check out the Seesmic promo video and see more screenshots after the break.
Seesmic for iPhone is available as a free download from the iTunes App Store.
Seesmic updates Android client, adds home screen widget

Seesmic makes one of the most popular Twitter clients for Google Android. And the company has just pushed out a new version that comes with three major new features:
- Home Screen Widget
- Native Retweet
- Geotagging

Scan to install
The widget lets you see the latest update from your contacts on your home screen. You can also tap the compose box to start writing a new Tweet, or tap your username to bring up the full Seesmic client. Tapping an individual message on the widget brings up that message in the Seesmic app, allowing you to retweet, reply, or perform other actions.
Unfortunately the home screen widget isn’t customizable. So if you wanted, for instance, have a larger widget to see the last 3 tweets from your contacts on your home screen, there’s currently no way to do that.
The new retweet feature in Seesmic 1.3 mimics the way you can retweet messages on the Twitter web site. And the geotagging feature lets you tag messages with your location, a map link, or an address.
Seesmic 1.3 is available as a free download from the Android Market. You can scan the image to the right with your phone to download and install the app.
