Twitter for BlackBerry adds multiple account support

Twitter 2.1 beta for BlackBerry

There’s a new beta version of the official Twitter app for BlackBerry, and it adds support for multiple Twitter accounts. Now if you have a personal account and one for work, you can login to both from your BlackBerry smartphone using Twitter 2.1 beta.

The app is available as a free download from the BlackBerry Beta Zone.

Twitter 2.1 beta supports up to 4 Twitter accounts at once. The name of your current profile will show up in the header so you won’t forget which account you’re using. You can also cross-post Tweets between accounts.

In addition to multi-account support, the new Twitter app also makes it easier to edit your Profile data thanks to an edit link on the Profile page.

Twitter’s mobile apps for Android and iOS already support multiple accounts.

TweetCaster launches Twitter app for iPad

Tweetcaster already offers one of the most popular Twitter apps for the iPhone and iPod touch. Now the developers have introduced a new version of the app which plays well with the iPad as well.

The iPad user interface was designed to utilize the iPad’s 10″ screen, meaning you’ll find Trends, Nearby, Who to Follow and Search boxes all in the real estate of a single screen. The phone-sized app requires you to switch between views one at a time.

TweetCaster also developed a unique feature called Smart Filters, which filters your timeline in a single tap to show only tweets with photos or tweets with links.

Besides a clean, visually-impressive interface, you’ll find support for multiple accounts, Facebook integration, ‘advanced’ profile editing, and all of Twitter’s standard features (such as URL shortening and multimedia uploading.) Other features include custom color coding (for specific Twitter users, including yourself), multiple themes and font sizes, and Instapaper support for offline reading.

You can download TweetCaster for iOS from the App Store for free if you don’t mind seeing advertisements in the app. If you want to go ad-free, you can pick up the TweetCaster Pro for $4.99.

Microsoft shows off Windows Phone 7 Mango’s social networking features

Windows Phone 7 social notifications

Microsoft is set to release the next major update to Windows Phone 7 soon. The update (code-named Mango) will bring a number of new features including support for multitasking, better messaging, an improved user interface for switching between apps, and support for visual voicemail. Another update is tight integration with Twitter and LinkedIn.

This week Microsoft released a video showing how the new social features will work.

In a nutshell, updates from Facebook, Twitter, Windows Live LinkedIn will all show up in your phone’s People Hub. But if the stream gets too crowded, you can filter by social network.

There’s also a new social notification feature that works with a Live Tile on your home screen. When there’s new activity from your social networks, you’ll see it on your home screen. When you tap the tile it will take you to a notifications window where you can see if someone has mentioned you on Twitter, written on your Facebook Wall, or taken other action. You can also reply to messages from this window, retweet Twitter messages, or perform other actions.

In other words, while on most mobile platforms you need to install separate apps to get the most out of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social networks, the built-in social features of Windows Phone 7 Mango may be enough for many users. Of course, if you don’t actually use any of those social networks, this feature might just be a waste of space, but it’s probably a small waste at worst.

Twitter for Android gets push notifications, multiple account support

There’s a new version of the official Twitter app available from the Android Market and it has a few major improvements. The first one is a big one: support for multiple Twitter accounts. Up until now you had to use a third party Twitter app such as TweetDeck (which was recently purchased by Twitter) if you wanted to use more than one Twitter account with a single app.

When Twitter initially launched, I doubt the company really expected people to use multiple accounts. But as a web publisher, I have three accounts, one for myself and one for each of my web sites. It allows me to keep my communications with each group on target. When using the Twitter web site, I have to logout of one account and into another to use multiple accounts. Now I can do the same thing with the mobile Android app just by tapping a few buttons to flip between accounts.

Seesmic social networking app drops support for BlackBerry

Seesmic

Popular social networking service Seesmic allows users to interact with your Twitter and Facebook accounts across a number of platforms. There’s a web app, desktop apps for Windows or Mac, and a line of mobile apps for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone 7. There’s also a BlackBerry app, but Seesmic has announced that it will drop support for that platform soon.

While Research in Motion’s BlackBerry platform is certainly struggling to keep up with the rapid growth of iOS and Android, there are still a lot of Blackberry users out there, so Seesmic’s advice that “those effected [sic] by this change” try out Seesmic for other mobile platforms seems a bit… silly. I doubt many people will trade in their BlackBerry for an Android phone just to keep using Seesmic.

That said, it seems clear that plenty of people are trading in their Blackberries for other devices which is probably part of the reason Seesmic has decided to focus on other platforms where the app is more popular.

Twidroyd 6.0 for Android adds customizable toolbar, much more

Twidroyd 6.0

UberMedia has released a major update for the popular Twidroyd app for Android. Twidroyd 6.0 makes the “UbserBar” at the bottom of the screen customizable, allowing you to choose which buttons appear. There’s a lengthy list of options including Deals, Search, Trends, and Nearby Tweets. The only items you’re stuck with are @mentions and Direct Messages, because honestly, a Twitter client that hid those features wouldn’t be much use now, would it?

Other new features in Twidroyd 6.0 include:

  • There’s an option to show the exact timestamp.
  • The app now asks if you’re sure you want to discard tweets.
  • Twidroyd has a new option to automatically shorten tweets over 140 characters.
  • There are new font size options.
  • There are send, attach, and shorten buttons on the compose screen.

You can find a complete list of changes in the release notes.

Twidroyd 6.0 is available as a free download from the Android Market.

What’s coming in iOS 5.0?

Notification Center

Apple introduced iOS 5.0 today. An early version is already available for developers, and the company will push out a software update for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users later this fall. The latest operating system will support all apple mobile devices from the iPhone 3GS on up. That includes the iPhone 4, the third and fourth generation iPod touch, and all iPad models.

We’ll also get the full set of iCloud features this fall, including the ability to backup most of the data on your device for free, synchronize photos, music, apps, documents, and iBooks progress across devices, and sto tore music on the web.

So what’s new in iOS 5.0? Apple says there will be 250 changes, but the company outlined some of the biggest updates today. Here’s a quick rundown:

Notifications

Apple has finally improved notifications. Instead of annoying pop-up notices, iOS 5.0 will feature a Notification Center which displays the latest notifications from all your apps. You can access it by swiping down from the top of your screen. This view will also show you weather and stock information. Some folks had been expecting Apple to add support for widgets on the home screen, but it sounds like the closest we’re going to get are notification widgets.

PC Free

You’ll no longer need a PC or Mac to use an iOS device. When you first turn on your new mobile device instead of showing a USB cable on the start screen you’ll just see a message that says “welcome.” That’s because you can activate your device over a wireless connection. And if you do have a PC you’ll be able to synchronize without a USB cable.

iOS 5.0 to feature tight Twitter integration

Apple has announced that Twitter will be built into iOS 5.0 at a deep system level. This allows users to sign into Twitter and then automatically use their Twitter credentials to login to any other app that accepts Twitter logins. Twitter will also be integrated with the Camera or Photos apps, allowing you to snap a photo and send it to your Twitter followers almost right away.

Other iOS apps including the Safari web browser, YouTube app and Maps application will include Twitter integration, making it easy to share information or links with your contacts.

Twitter will also work with the contact list on your phone. Your phone can pull in photos from your contacts’ Twitter profiles, for instance.
