Microsoft has made it pretty clear that won’t be able to upgrade most Windows Mobile 6.5 phones to Windows Phone 7 Series when the new mobile operating system is released later this year. But that doesn’t mean you need to buy a new device to get the look and feel of Windows Phone 7 Series.

An independent developer by the name of Jaxbot has released a beta version of a Windows Phone 7 theme for Windows Mobile. All you have to do is download and install a .cab file and you’ll get some of the coolest features of the upcoming OS, including Live tiles with rotating pictures and other features, a Bing search utility with a background that changes to match the Bing picture of the day, and a program launcher that resembles the Windows Phone 7 Series/Zune HD app launcher.

The theme is still a work in progress and it’s a little rough around the edges. But you can see what it looks like in the video after the break.

The Jaxbot Windows Phone 7 Series installer is available for download from the xda-developers forum.
