For the better part of a century LIFE Magazine documented American life and international affairs in pictures. While the magazine is no longer published, Life.com offers an amazing repository of historic and contemporary photos. And the company recently launched an iPhone app that gives you access to all of those photos on the go.

You can search the archive or browser for pictures by category, with Editor’s Picks, News, Travel, Sports, and other categories to choose from. Tapping on any picture brings up a few options. You can see the captions for the photo or click the share button to send the image to Facebook, Twitter, or share it via email.

All image support pinch to zoom, although they’re really formatted to be viewed on the iPhone screen and just look kind of blurry if you zoom.

LIFE Mobile for the iPhone is available as a free download from the App Store.
