Twitter has launched an official app for the iPhone and iPod touch. While there are plenty of third party Twitter apps in the App Store, this one shouldn’t be hard to single out — it’s the one called Twitter.

The new app comes just a few weeks after Apple acquired the company responsible for the popular Tweetie Twitter client for the iPhone. And the new Twitter app actually does look a lot like Tweetie. But it has a few new features, including a new search screen with a trending topics section an a suggested users feature — something Twitter no longer offers on its web interface.

The app is also now available as a free download. Tweetie used to sell for $2.99. On the other hand, Twitter for the iPhone now includes advertising sponsored tweets.
