The Internet Movie Database is pretty much the top destination for information about movies, TV shows, actors, and anyone else associated with telling stories with moving pictures. Want to know how many movies William H. Macy has been in? Want to know who directed His Girl Friday? IMDb can tell you. And now it can tell you more quickly on Android phones.

The IMDb has released a free Android app that offers all the same content you can find on the web site, but optimized for a small screen. There’s also an iPhone app which has been available for about half a year.

Having tried to use the web browser on my Nexus One to look up information on IMDb in the past, I can say the mobile app is a huge improvement. It took a few moments to load the home screen the first time I launched the IMDb app, but I was able to conduct searches almost immediately. Trailers are available for many movies, and they open up in the default Android video player. You can also see pictures for movies and performers.

The IMDb app for Android is available as a free download from the Android Market. You can check out more screenshots after the break.
