Long before the iPhone, or even the original iPod music player was a glint in Steve Jobs’ eye, Apple launched the Newton PDA. It was either ahead of its time or just a huge flop, but despite having some loyal fans, the Newton never really took off in a big way, and eventually the PDA space was dominated by Palm, Symbian/Epoc, and Windows mobile devices… for a while.

Now it looks like you can relive the golden days though, by installing an Einstein newton emulator on the iPhone. Developer Matthias Melcher has taken the source code from an emulator and ported it to run on the device, and the source code is available for anyone looking to do the same.

Matthias says he plans to submit the emulator to the App Store, but there are plenty of reasons Apple might reject the project.
