Less than a day after Apple officially pushed out iOS 4.1 to iPhone and iPod touch users, hackers have figured out how to jailbreak the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system. Jailbreaking is a method of unlocking the software on an Apple product so that you can install third party apps and make system changes that haven’t officially been approved by Apple.

The tools for jailbreaking your own device aren’t available for download yet, as the project is still a work in progress. But it sounds like the hackers working on iOS 4.1 could make them available pretty soon.

The exploit reportedly works on the iPad and iPod touch as well as the iPhone 4, and word on the street is that it will take a major hardware change on Apple’s part to prevent users from jailbreaking their devices using this exploit.
