HP has stunned the world by acknowledging that it’s going to produce smartphones early next year using the WebOS operating system. And when I say stunned, I mean, what did you think HP was going to do after it spent $1.2 billion to purchase Palm?

That said, it’s always nice to receive confirmation, and Reuters is reporting that an HP vice president said the company is on track to launch its first WebOS powered phones early next year.

It looks like HP won’t be making any Android phones, and while the company has a long history of producing Windows Mobile devices I haven’t heard anything about plans for Windows Phone 7 hardware from HP.
