As expected, Yahoo has started rolling out new mobile apps that let you make video calls. And when I say mobile apps, I mean last night Yahoo released one new app — an updated version of Yahoo Messenger for iOS with support for video calling on the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

The app doesn’t currently support the 4th generation iPod touch, even though it has a front-facing camera. And the company’s Google Android app hasn’t been updated yet, so there’s no support for video calls on Android yet.

Still, it looks like the number of apps that allow you to make video calls is growing… and the fact that Yahoo already has about 80 million Messenger users around the world makes this a pretty big deal.

Users can make free voice or video calls from supported phones to other Yahoo Messenger users whether they’re on an iPhone or using Yahoo’s desktop software. The updated app also features the new Yahoo Voice Phone Out capabilities, allowing users to make cheap VoIP calls to normal phone numbers, as well as SMS messages. Yahoo also added support for multitasking, allowing the app to run in the background while you’re using other iOS apps.

Yahoo Messenger for iOS is available as a free download from the App Store.
