If you’ve been waiting on the edge of your seat waiting for a big name media mogul to launch an iPad-only news publication, it looks like you don’t have to wait for Rupert Murdoch’s “The Daily” to launch. Tomorrow Richard Branson’s new project hits the App Store… it’s called, “Project.” Clever, no?

At launch, Project will only be available for the iPad, although versions for the iPhone and other mobile devices may be in the works. There are no plans for a print version.

There’s also a blog, which is accessible from any web browser and which provides stories about science, technology, games, clothing and other topics that lead me to believe that the target audience is men between the ages of 15 and 40. The blog will be accessible from the iPad app, but the app will also allow subscribers to access much more content.

There’s a video of the cover page for the first issue available after the break. It looks like the publishers are having fun with the format. Instead of a static image, you get something a bit more appropriate to the living-in-the-future vibe of reading a a magazine on a 1.6 pound screen you can hold in your hands.

Update: The app is now available from the App Store. The Project app is free, but each issue will run you $3.99. The app requires an iPad running iOS 4.2.
