MPlayer is a popular and powerful open source video player which can handle all sorts of different media files from Windows Media to QuickTime with a little MP4, H.264, DivX, MKV, and OGG thrown in for good measure. Now there’s a version of MPlayer which works with webOS devices like the Palm Pre. Unfortunately it doesn’t yet support webOS 2.0 which means you can’t use it with the Palm Pre 2.

You can find instructions for installing the app at the PreCentral forums, or you can check out the original developer’s thread (which is in French).

Due to software and hardware limitations, don’t expect the webOS version of MPlayer to play every HD video you throw at it smoothly, but users have reported decent results with a wide range of video formats.
