I’ve never quite mastered the art of handing out my business card at meetings. I tend to fumble around in my wallet and inevitably pull out a ripped or bent card which doesn’t really put my best foot forward. Fortunately, it’s starting to look like we might be moving to a post-paper society, at least as far as business cards are concerned, thanks to a growing number of apps that let you share contact information with your phone.

One of the most intriguing contact sharing apps I’ve sen in a while is called My Name is E. Here’s how it works. You create an account either using the web site or from the app itself on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. You can create multiple “cards,” to share with other users. For instance, if you want one card with your home and work phone numbers, and another that only gives your work email address, you can do that.

When you want to share your data with someone, just fire up the app and choose the card you want to share. You should see a list of other users in close physical proximity who are also running the app. The app lets you share your card with multiple users at once. If the person you want to send your contact info to doesn’t use the app, you can also enter an email address.

Once you’ve collected contact info for another user, their data will be added to your iPhone contacts.

My Name is E is available as a free download from the App Store.
