Intuit has released the latest version of its SnapTax mobile tax preparation app for iOS, along with the first version for Android. SnapTax is available as a free download for each platform, although you’ll have to pay $14.99 when you actually want to file your tax return. That price is good through March 25th, after which the fee will likely go up to $19.99.

Here’s how the apps work. You take a picture of your W-2 forms with your phone’s camera, answer some questions, and then preview and file your forms.

I highly recommend downloading the free app before spending any money though, as SnapTax is only designed for relatively simple returns. The mobile app will ask you a few questions and let you know whether it can help you or not in just a few seconds. For instance, if you own your own home, make more than $80,000 per year (or $100,000 if you’re married and filing jointly), or have income that’s not reported on a W-2, then SnapTax probably isn’t for you.

On the other hand if your financial life is a little more basic, you normally fill out a Form 1040-EZ, and you’re too lazy to fill out the forms by yourself, SnapTax certainly seems like it could save you a little time and effort.

SnapTax is available as a free download from the iTunes App Store and the Android Market.
