SPB Shell 3D is a new app that replaces the default Android user interface with a highly customizable home screen that features slick 3D animations. It’s pretty, and while the 3D transitions aren’t really all that useful, there are other features such as resizeable folders and widgets that are very nice. But at $14.95, it seems kind of overpriced.
SPB has been making mobile apps for Windows Mobile, Symbian, and other smartphone operating systems for ages, so the price isn’t surprising. this sort of app could easily go for $14.95 or even $29.95 for Windows Mobile. But Android apps are usually much cheaper due to competition and customers who are just plain cheap.
That said, there aren’t a lot of home screen replacements that offer as many custom widgets and features as SPB Shell 3D. The software has at least as many features as the kind of custom UI you would expect from tools developed by phone makers. In fact, SPB hopes to work with OEM phone makers and wireless carriers to preload the software on handsets. But unlike HTC Sense, Motorola Blur, or Samsung TouchWiz, SPB Shell 3D is available as a standalone download from the Android Market.
The app requires Android 2.1 and up.
