SPB Shell 3D is a home screen replacement for Google Android which offers slick 3D animations when flipping between virtual desktops, as well as some custom home screen widgets and other features. The only problem is that SPB Shell costs $15. If that’s a little rich for your blood, you might want to check out Regina 3D Launcher. It offers similar features for the low, low price of… nothing.
Regina 3D Launcher isn’t quite as polished as SPB Shell, and flipping between home screens felt a bit sluggish at times on my Google Nexus One. But the app is very, very pretty.
The developer also offers a series of customizable widgets which you can install separately, including a To Do list and Weather app. Baked into Regina 3D Launcher is an attractive calendar widget which will show the next few appointments on your Google Calendar schedule.
In addition to the 3D graphics when flipping between virtual home screens, Regina 3D Launcher gives you 5 workspaces to populate with shortcuts and widgets, and a side-scrolling app launcher. You can also set up a password-protected “secret workspace.”
The visual effects can be customized, and you an enable vibration feedback when navigating between workspaces.
The clock and weather widget on the home screen is pretty slick looking, but when I installed the Regina Weather app and tried to select my city, Philadelphia wasn’t available from the list. The best I could do was New York City, which is about 80 miles away.
