Research in Motion has released a major update to Traffic, a BlackBerry application that provides traffic updates in real-time. Traffic essentially collects your speed and position data while you’re using the app to help other Traffic users.

New features include the ability to  select from multiple routes and the addition of pre-set destinations directly from BlackBerry’s native contacts app.

Blackberry Traffic 2.0 now gives you a new way to look at predicted traffic flow for differing routes and provides better estimates on arrival times. Traffic also gives users the option to share estimated arrival times via SMS, email, or PIN (BBM).

The most significant new feature might be that it offers advice for the best time to depart for a given location based on real-time traffic data. This has an enormous amount of potential considering that the data is constantly updated.

RIM’s Traffic 2.0 is free and runs on all BlackBerry devices operating on OS 4.6 and up in North America. As a reminder, you will need a device with GPS capabilities. You can download it today from BlackBerry App World.
