While Microsoft’s Zune desktop software can restore backups of your Windows Phone 7 device, it’s only built to create a backup as part of the update installation process. That means to date you may only have had three or four opportunities to back up all that precious data on your phone.

If you’d like a little extra reassurance, an XDA forum member has thoughtfully put together a handy little program which can backup your WP7 phone whenever you like.

A trio of prerequisites are necessary: the Zune software, the Windows Phone Support Tool for your architecture (x64 or x86), and a WP7 update package for any phone (doesn’t have to be the one you own). WP7 Zune Backup will notify if you’re missing one of the components before it attempts to perform a backup.
