Update: That was fast. Facebook for BlackBerry is now available from the BlackBerry App World.

The new video chat app for the BlackBerry PlayBook isn’t the only major update coming this month. Research in Motion has also announced that an official Facebook app is on the way.

The app isn’t just a scaled up version of the BlackBerry smartphone Facebook app. Instead it’s been optimized for the tablet’s 7 inch display and includes all the usual features including managing your friends, viewing photos and videos, and interacting with the news feed.

You’ll also be able to use Facebook Chat with notifications arriving in the tablet’s notification bar. The app lets you tag friends in photos, respond to comments, and perform all the other usual actions.

What’s interesting is that this is the first Facebook app that will be optimized for any tablet platform. There’s no official Facebook app for the Apple iPad or for Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets yet.
