Disney Comics

Disney has launched a new app which brings classic and new comic books to iOS. The Disney Comics app is available as a free download from the App Store.

Right now there are about 50 titles available to download via in-app purchases, as well as a handful of free titles. Disney plans to offer about two additional titles each week.

Content includes classic comics featuring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck as well as newer titles with characters from Toy Story and Cars.

While the app will run on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, it’s clearly designed for the iPad. The default view shows complete comic book pages — even if the text is too tiny to read on a 3.5 inch display. The two-pane view you get when you rotate to landscape mode is even worse.

You can zoom in using a pinch gesture, but unlike Comixology and other comic book apps, Disney Comics won’t let you advance cell-by-cell. Instead you have to slide the image haphazardly to navigate once you zoom in.

The app is free, so if you’re interested in checking out some classic comics books you might want to check it out. But I’m not sure why you’d pay $0.99 to $3.99 per title to purchase any apps unless you had an iPad.
