Apple TV

Apple rolled out a software update for the second generation Apple TV. No, it doesn’t add support for third party apps from the App Store yet, but Apple TV OS 4.3 does have a couple of nifty new features, including:

  • You can now purchase TV shows from the Apple TV (previously you could only rent them).
  • Once you purchase a show on an Apple TV you can re-download it on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  • If you purchase a TV show on another device, it will show up as playable on your Apple TV.
  • You can now stream videos from Vimeo.
The Apple TV is a $99 box that you can stick next to your TV to stream video from a computer or iOS device on your home network.
Today’s software update leverages Apple’s new iCloud service which basically stores all of your App Store and iTunes purchase information online instead of in iTunes on your computer, and it’s another step towards Apple’s vision of a PC-free experience.
