The Apple TV is a small $99 box that you can stick by your TV and connect to your home internet network to stream internet video, music, and other content to your TV. But if you’d like to do even more with the Apple TV, you can jailbreak it.

The folks at Firecore have just released tools to jailbreak the latest version of the Apple TV software.

Apple TV 5.0 jailbreak

Seas0nPass 0.8.3 is a free tool for jailbreaking Apple TV 5.0, allowing you to run code that’s not officially supported by Apple. For $29.95, you can also purchase aTV Flash, a utility that makes it easy to configure the Apple TV to support web browsing, RSS feeds, weather forecasts, and other features.

Right now the jailbreak for Apple TV 5.0 is still a tethered jailbreak. That means if you need to reboot your device you’ll have to connect it to a PC and run the jailbreaking software again.

Some of the plugins that worked with earlier versions are also not yet supported. So if you need XBMC or Plex, you might want to stick with Apple TV OS 4.2 for now.

You can find more details at the Firecore blog.
