The iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of the redsnow utility for jailbreaking iOS devices. This new developer-only version can jailbreak iOS 6 beta on select devices including the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and 4th generation iPod touch.
It doesn’t yet work with the iPhone 4S or any iPad models. The new utility also only performs a tethered jailbreak, which means if you need to reboot your device you’ll have to connect your iPhone or iPod to a computer and run redsn0w again.
This release is aimed at developers of apps that will only run on jailbroken devices, and not the general public. The Cydia app store doesn’t work with iOS 6, for instance, and you’ll need a valid Apple developer UDID in order to use iOS 6 anyway.
But the good news is that the release of redsn0w 0.9.13dev1 shows that it’s already possible to jailbreak Apple’s latest operating system. That means there’s a decent chance that when Apple releases iOS 6 to the public this fall, the iPhone Dev Team will be ready with tools that allow anyone to jailbreak their devices.
Jailbreaking an iOS device allows you to install apps that aren’t available from the App Store, including software that changes the way the operating system behaves.
