The folks behind the popular Android Open Kang Project have released AOKP JB Build 5. That’s the fifth major release of the custom ROM for Android phones and tablets to be based on Google Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Among other things, the latest release incorporates Google’s source code for Android 4.1.2, a minor update that was made available recently.

Update: AOKP JB Milestone 1 is now available. This is the final release until Google releases the source code for Android 4.2.

Other new features include:

  • A custom navigation bar for Android tablets
  • NavBar widgets
  • Customizable lockscreen widgets
  • New icons

You can find more features and details in the release announcement.

AOKP is based on the popular CyanogenMod custom firmware, and the goal is to submit some of these features to the main branch. So if you’re running CM10 and don’t want to switch to AOKP, you may still get some of the new features eventually.

The simplest way to find out if AOKP JB Build 5 is available for your device is to install and run the Kangerator app and check the “device Downloader” section.
